World Twenty20 – Group F, Lord’s 13.30
Match Betting Preview
If the bookmakers odds are to believed, Sri Lanka at odds of 1/25 only have to turn up to win today. As much as we all know cricket isn’t like that I still don’t expect the Irish to be leaving Lord’s with anything other than a defeat.
Sri Lanka have shown themselves to be real contenders in the outright winner betting, they are now into 2nd favourites at 10/3. Only South Africa have looked more impressive so far in this tournament.
Can’t see any changes in the Sri Lanka side today as they won’t take any chances against the plucky Irish. With New Zealand well beating the Irish by 83 runs Sri Lanka know the importance of run-rate in a group which could well see three teams all end up with 2 wins each.
Ireland know they will have to perform outstandingly well just to take some positives out of this match. They have already over-achieved just by getting this far – by winning their cup final against Bangladesh.
In Trent Johnston and the O’Brien brothers they have players of ability well able to ruffle the bigger teams feathers. Johnston is an experienced seam bowler who is a handy lower order batsman, while Niall O’Brien is a quality wicket-keeper batsman who in the past has been tipped to play Test cricket for England. His brother Kevin is a big hitting middle order batsman and a decent medium pace bowler.
To have any chance today the Irish need these three and more to be firing, but even then I don’t hold out much hope for them.
Sri Lanka have won toss and will bat.
